And you don’t want to feel completely burnt out by a rigid workout schedule and restrictive diet…

Here’s why…

First off, Athlean-X’s Total Beast program makes you practically LIVE in the gym.

Personally, I’d rather kill it in fewer sessions, and spend the rest of my time watching Netflix, but I guess that’s just me.

OK, that’s probably the lamest criticism I can give a workout program. I know, but hear me out.

When I’m working out, I want to push my body and my muscles to the point of inducing muscular hypertrophy and adaptation.

For accountability purposes, the program does not allow you to see your calendar for the next month until you complete all workouts. So that’s what we’ll be referencing.

Base vs. Beast vs. Total Beast

Each workout gives you the ability to choose your “Mode,” so to speak.

“Base” mode is for beginners and will be the standard workout, but don’t expect it to be easy.

“Beast” mode will ramp up the number of exercises and reps per workout.

“Total Beast” will introduce insane exercise concepts like “Triple X Sets,” which is essentially a unique take on grueling rest-pause sets.

You can change your mode from one workout to the next. So don’t feel you have to push through a Beast workout when you’re not at 100% when you wake up.

Total Body Workouts

At least in phase one, you’ll be cranking through three total-body workouts per week, aptly known as total body workouts 1, 2, and 3.

Intensity and reps will vary from one workout to the next, as well as in each workout.

Some exercises will be performed at your 4-6 RM, others at 10-12 RM, and a few at your 15 RM—particularly with ladder sets. Many workouts also infuse ISO holds that burn like hell.

Exercise-wise, plan to hit each muscle group three times a week, with exercises like:

  • Barbell hip thrusts
  • Weighted dips
  • Deadlifts
  • Barbell rows
  • 3D crossovers
  • Reverse barbell lunges

There’s no shortage of variety, and you’ll never be bored with any workout you come across!

Beast Regeneration

Twice a week, you’ll get a conditioning and recovery-based workout known as “Beast Regeneration.” This is your chance each week to choose your workout.

With kettlebells, agility ladders, and resistance bands, you’ll do sets of “corrective” exercises like band pull aparts and hip band ladders and conditioning exercises like mountain climbers.

Some choice workouts also end with sets of upper and lower body stretches.

The goal of these “Beast Regeneration” workouts is to speed up your recovery between workouts and return to the gym for your next workout stronger than before.

Power Days

Starting on week three of phase one, you’ll start adding in once-weekly power workouts, known as “Power Days.” These workouts are meant to build on your upper and lower body power.

Most workouts will start with some variation of the three core power exercises, including box jumps, dead rows, or hand cleans and presses.

You’ll then move onto what’s called a “Power Ladder.” This consists of three exercises, like plyo push-ups and pull-ups, as you work your way up to six or so reps per set.

These workouts will help you mold the power aspect of your athleticism.


Each phase will also come with one challenge, where you’ll see where you stand against some of the fittest athletes in the world.

For challenges, you’ll either record the number of reps you complete, the rounds you muster through, or the total time it takes to complete a challenge.

Add your performance to the leaderboard and see how you compare with other Athlean-X users.

Meal Plan

One last note on this program: It comes with a meal plan.

Each day, you’ll have six meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and three snacks) planned for you and broken down by ingredients for each.

You also have the option to make a “shred swap” or a “size swap,” depending on what your overall fitness goal is: Weight loss, mass building, or both.

2 Negatives of the Workout Program

  1. No Refund Policy: We’ve all chosen workout programs in the past, only to get halfway through the first workout and realize it’s too intense or not intense enough. Unfortunately, Athlean-X program purchases are all final. So if you start this program and dislike it right off the bat, you won’t be getting any of your money back.
  2. Five Straight Workouts: Some guys prefer being in the gym as often as possible, so this one probably won’t be a deal-breaker. But the fact you’ll be doing full-body workouts essentially five days back-to-back, even with those Beast Regeneration days, you may not be entirely at 100% by the time you return to the gym. Overtraining is possible.


Total Beast vs Max Size

Can’t decide between taming the beast or building more size with Max Size? Let me help you figure it out.

First, here are 3 things that both programs share:

  • 12 Weeks of Workouts: Whether you join Total Beast or Max Size, you’ll be hitting the gym hard for 3 months.
  • Schedule & Meal Plan: Both programs have you training 5 days per week and include a full meal plan to fuel your muscle-building progress.

Next, let’s talk about where these programs differ:

  • Overall Goal: Unlike Max Size, Beast is a total body split program designed to improve your overall athleticism. Max Size is aimed purely at getting you bigger.
  • Meal Plan Swaps: Total Beast allows you to swap out certain meals based on your current goal (e.g., shred or gain size). Max Size only offers a “more size” option since you shouldn’t focus on anything else but getting bigger.

Total Beast vs AX1

AX1 is considered the foundation workout in the Athlean-X collection, but how does it stack up against the beast?

Here are the major things these two workout programs have in common:

  • Beginners Are Welcome: AX1 was specifically designed for beginners, but Total Beast gives you the ability to scale the difficulty down if you’re still new to training.
  • Train 5 Days Per Week: Like most Athlean-X programs, you’ll spend 5 days in the gym and 2 days resting up.
  • Different Goals Covered: Whether you want to bulk up or lean down, both programs allow you to customize your meal plan to meet your goal.

Here are where these programs stray from each other:

  • Variety: Total Beast offers a lot of variety in the form of workouts designed for explosiveness and agility (with celebrity cameos too). AX1 is a little more predictable and focuses on repetition to establish a strength foundation.
  • Multiple Experience Levels: What’s nice about Total Beast is you have multiple difficulty settings that essentially make the program brand new after each 12 week period (i.e., Basic, Beast, and Total Beast). AX1 is only meant for complete beginners however and you might outgrow the program after the first run through.

If you’re a strength foundation purest, AX1 might be the one to pick. But if you want a program that expands with you as you improve, Total Beast is your program.

Total Beast vs Body Beast

With Total Beast and Body Beast occupying the same “beast space,” you might ask yourself, “Are these workouts the same?”

Not exactly. First, here are 4 things both programs have in common:

  • 90 Days of Training: Both programs last 12 weeks, pushing you through workouts designed to build you up, and lean you out.
  • Similar Equipment Required: Despite Body Beast being in Beachbody’s home workout catalog, practically the same equipment is needed as Athlean-X’s Total Beast. This includes a barbell, pull-up bar, adjustable bench, dumbbells, resistance band, and jump rope.
  • A Phased Approach: Total Beast takes you through 4 phases (i.e., Beaxst Awakening, Beaxst Rising, Beaxst Power, and Beaxst Unleashed). Body Beast has 3 phases (i.e., Build, Bulk, and Beast).
  • They’re Both Named “Beast”: Come on. You knew I had to include this obvious point.

Now let’s cover 3 points where these two programs branch off:

  • Price: Total Beaxst by Athlean-X costs $97.95 for the program where Body Beast is part of the Beachbody on Demand subscription that starts at $8.25/month and includes their full workout catalog.
  • Multiple Beast Levels: Total Beast has multiple levels built into the program that allow you to scale workouts based on the difficulty that matches you. On the other hand, Body Beast is recommended for intermediates and doesn’t have a lot of scaling options.
  • Challenges: Athlean-X likes to add variety into their programs and that’s what you get with multiple challenges sprinkled throughout. Body Beast workouts definitely offer variety, but without specific challenges to break up the schedule.

Overall, Total Beast training is based more on pure athleticism where Body Beast sticks to traditional bodybuilding with cardio elements throughout. But you have to weigh your goals with the price tags too.

Total Beast vs Insanity Max 30

Insanity Max 30 might look like a comparable program to Total Beast, are they really?

Here’s the rundown on their similarities:

  • HD Videos Included: Both Total Beast and Insanity Max 30 come with a library of full HD videos to guide you through each workout.
  • Full Meal Plans: Don’t know what to eat? Jeff Cavaliere and Shaun T have detailed meal plans so you know exactly what fuel you need to move forward with your progress.

Now let’s discuss their differences:

  • Equipment Needed: This is the main difference. Total Beast is a program meant for a full gym setting so you’ll need things like barbells, dumbbells, etc. Insanity Max 30 is a bodyweight training program with a comfort mat listed as optional equipment.
  • Experience Level: Athlean-X’s program accommodates beginners and beyond. On the other hand, don’t even try Insanity Max 30 unless you’ve already beaten the basic Insanity program (i.e., for advanced trainees only).
  • Workout Length: Each Total Beast workout lasts about 60 minutes. Insanity Max 30 on the other hand, will have you hitting the showers after only 30 intense minutes.
  • Goal: Insanity is definitely a more weight loss-focused routine. No muscle-building here! Alternatively, Total Beast is adaptable to multiple goals whether that’s building muscle or losing fat.

As you can see, Athlean-X and Insanity are more different than they are similar. If you’re a beginner and want a gym-centric routine, go for Total Beast. But if you’ve been around the block and want to shed fat with some intense bodyweight training, pick Insanity Max 30.

Total Beast vs Liift4

Liift4 by Beachbody On Demand is weight lifting and cardio? Does that mean it’s the same as Total Beast? Let’s find out!

Liift4 and Total Beast are similar in these ways:

  • Focus on Building Strength: Just like Total Beast focuses on building athleticism through strength, Liift4 does the same with some common free weight exercises.
  • Cardio: The punny title for Liift4 lets you know that it’s half weight training and half HIIT cardio so you’ll get your swole and your sweat on. Total Beast is in the same boat since Cavaliere designed his program to build endurance on top of beastly strength.
  • Similar Goals: Want to build muscle and lose body fat? Well, both programs are designed to help you make it happen.

Moving on – here’s how these programs are different:

  • Training Frequency: Total Beast is serious business with its 5 days per week schedule. Liift4 however, gives you an extra rest day and schedules 4 workout days.
  • Schedule Length: Total Beast is 12 weeks long and Liift4 is only 8. I guess they couldn’t figure out anything to do for another 4 weeks.
  • Vegan Nutrition: Here’s a new one – If you don’t consume animal products, Liift4 has a nutrition plan just for vegans. Total Beast on the other hand, is gonna make you figure out your own food replacements if you don’t want meat.
  • Hand-Picked Workout Music: Liift4 actually has a Spotify playlist curated specifically for each workout in the schedule. That’s a nice touch!

Remember, Total Beast is designed to turn you into an athletic beast through intensity at no costs. It’s gotta live up to the name, right?

Liift4 is designed to build muscle and lose body fat on a more lenient schedule with a few interesting lifestyle accommodations like the vegan nutrition and workout music picks.

Total Beast Review: Is It the Best Full Body Workout?

The Athlean-X Total Beast Workout Program is one of the better programs out there if you’re looking to target gains in every facet of fitness and physique.

This program is accessible to all skill levels thanks to three intensity levels, hits all fitness areas adequately (including power and agility), is unique, and prioritizes compound lifts.

But, the program isn’t without its downsides.

In addition to not getting any money back if you disapprove of the program after purchase, working out five days straight may be overwhelming for the untrained individual.

Choose this program if you’re of the mindset that more is always better when it comes to fitness. But consider an easier program if you’re a true newbie looking to get your feet wet.

Like I said at the beginning of this review, if you goal is only to look good with minimal effort, Total Beast is not a good option for you.

Total Beast is going to be intense, require a significant time commitment, and have a restrictive diet.

But if you want to workout only 3 days per week…

Incorporate your favorite foods into your diet…

…and still build an impressive body without turning your schedule into a dumpster fire…

Then you should try Superhero X12 instead of Total Beast.
